Diving the Solomon Islands

Diving the Solomon Islands offers a truly unique blend of everything that makes the Coral Triangle so special — an extraordinary diversity of marine life, pristine reefs, and vibrant coral gardens — combined with the untouched beauty and remoteness of the Pacific’s outer atolls.

Add to that an incredible array of WWII wrecks, and it’s easy to see why the Solomon Islands are considered one of the must-dive destinations in the Indo-Pacific.

Scattered across the western Pacific Ocean, this remote island nation lies along along the southern arc of the Pacific Ring of Fire, between Papua New Guinea to the north and Vanuatu to the south.

It comprises of some 900 islands spread across the two main archipelagos, together with countless reefs, numerous lagoons, and passages.

The Solomon Islands’ rich wartime history adds another compelling dimension. The islands were a major theatre in the Pacific during World War II, where thousands of men, ships, and aircraft were lost.

So many wrecks rest in the waters north of Honiara that the area became famously known as Iron Bottom Sound — a pilgrimage site for wreck divers from around the world.

Since gaining independence in 1976, the Solomon Islands have maintained a distinct Melanesian identity, infused with elements of Polynesian culture and shaped by powerful tectonic forces.

Those same forces created a chain of mountainous islands draped in lush rainforest, crowned by active volcanoes, and fringed with lagoons of remarkable clarity. Above and below the surface, the Solomon Islands remain one of the last truly wild frontiers of tropical diving — a destination where biodiversity, history, and adventure converge.
