Some 50 km to the west of Halmahera island and about 70km south-west of Ternate & Tidore is the Goraici group of islands.
The people of the Goraici’s have an enviable reputation as pragmatic environmentalists who have succeeded in keeping their reefs healthy and in good condition.
They have done this by preventing the twin scourges of dynamite & cyanide fishing that has done so much damage elsewhere in Indonesia.
The area is indeed rich in marine life and the reefs were in very good condition.
The Goraici Islands could provide days of diving, but unfortunately we only had two, as the trip I was on was coming to an end and we had to get to North Sulawesi…
Not easy to get to, the Goraici Islands are very high on my Indonesian “bucket list” and I intend to get back there to really explore the area.

Diving Indonesia: West Halmahera Dive Sites – Tifore Island
An overnight sail from the Goraici Islands and roughly halfway between Halmahera & North Sulawesi is the small island of Tifore – right in the middle of the Molucca Sea and just about as remote as it gets!
On the southern side of Tifore is a reef at Pantai Sago, known for a school of barracudas found there from time to time and said to number over a 1000.
Diving the south-east face of the reef, where the current hits the reef is really a great dive, with superb hard & soft corals down deeper and huge shoals of schooling fish.
