Diving Indonesia: Lombok – South Lombok Logistics

Now that the new Lombok International Airport has opened direct flights are available with SilkAir from Singapore and AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur, or alternatively you can take the 25-minute flight from Ngurah Rai airport in Bali with Merpati, TransNusa Airlines or Lion Air.

Alternatively there is a public ferry that departs every 2 hours from Padang Bai in Bali, which will take you to the port of Lembar in Lombok. The journey takes about 3.5 hours, the ferry operates 24 hours per day and tickets are easy to get once you arrive at the harbor.

Diving Indonesia: South Lombok Scuba Diving – Who to Dive With?

George More of DiveZone

My trips to south Lombok were arranged with DiveZone who are based in Sekotong but have operations in both Kuta & Belongas Bay.

This turned out to offer great flexibility as the three dive centers update each other daily on local conditions.

So if conditions are not so good in one location or if something special is happening in another, then it’s easy to change plans.

DiveZone is run by George More, a German expatriate who has lived in Lombok for over 9 years and basically pioneered recreational diving in the south of the island.

George has dived the power sites of Magnet, Cathedral and The Zone probably more than anybody and is definitely the best person to talk to if you are considering a spot of adventurous diving at those sites.

Conditions vary greatly on those sites with the seasons and insight as to when to dive them and how to dive them is essential.

Diving Indonesia: South Lombok Scuba Diving – Where to Stay?

In Sekotong I stayed at Dolphins Lodge and DiveZone arranged to pick me up each morning.

Alternative accommodation in the Sekotong area is the BolaBola or the Gili Nanggu Cottages and DiveZone recently opened their own small resort called the Pearl Beach. In Belongas Bay there is the Belongas Bay Lodge if you don’t want to drive from Sekotong.

In Kuta I stayed at Ken’s Hotel which is just around the corner from the DiveZone shop, which itself is a short walk to the main beach where the dive boat is boarded.
